　　BRAZIL - Brazil has submitted a request to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) to expand Classical Swine Feverfree status to fourteen more states, as well as the Federal District around Brasilia.Currently, only two states have a certificate of freedom from classical swine fever: Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The status was won in May last year, during the 83rd OIE General Session in Paris.The disease, caused by a virus, is highly contagious and is notifiable to the OIE. It causes high fever, red spots in the body, paralysis in the hind legs, breathing difficulties and can lead to death of the animal.The latest cases were reported in Brazil in August 2009, in Amapá, Pará and Rio Grande do Norte.
